Dean W. Joelson, M.D.

Dr. Dean Joelson grew up in Georgia, went to college at Yale University, and graduated from medical school at Emory University in 2001. He did his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where he served as Chief Resident his final year. In 2006, Dr. Joelson moved back to Atlanta, where he practiced for 17 years at Piedmont Atlanta and Piedmont Fayette Hospitals, and for three years at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He started a solo practice at Piedmont Cartersville in 2023, where he is currently the hospital pathologist and laboratory Medical Director. Since his move to Piedmont Cartersville, Dr. Joelson has remained active in Piedmont Healthcare system-wide initiatives, including various committees and task forces. He is also a member of the College of American Pathologists, where he serves on the House of Delegates Steering Committee. Outside of work he spends time with his kids, plays golf (badly), gardens, and reads. He wonders what this pickleball thing is all about.

Evans Roberts, M.D.

Dr. Evans Louis Roberts III is a board-certified pathologist with subspecialties in hematopathology and molecular oncologic pathology who recently joined Piedmont Healthcare’s multi-hospital system. He completed his medical training at the University of Minnesota, Tulane University, and the Moffitt Cancer Center. Prior to joining Piedmont, he spent six years practicing at Chabert Medical Center in Houma, Louisiana, and two years in South Florida at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Florida. Dr. Roberts brings extensive leadership experience as a laboratory medical director specializing in validation, standard operating procedures, and high-resolution molecular diagnostics.

Dr. Evans works predominantly at Piedmont Augusta.

Mary Taneous, M.D.

Dr. Mary Taneous is a board-certified pathologist in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
with strong experience in community hospital-based pathology practice. She has
practiced at University Hospital/Piedmont Augusta since 2006, providing diagnostic
services across a broad range of surgical pathology, cytopathology, and frozen sections.

Dr. Taneous completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Medical
College of Georgia in Augusta in 2006. She subsequently served as a Clinical Assistant
Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia. Prior to her
pathology training in the United States, Dr. Taneous earned her medical degree and a
Master’s degree in Clinical Pathology from the Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria
University in Egypt.

Dr. Taneous has been a member of the pathology group serving University
Hospital/Piedmont Augusta for approximately twenty years and continues to provide
comprehensive anatomic and clinical pathology services to the hospital and its patients.

Dr. Taneous works predominantly at Piedmont Augusta.

Ronald Miler, PA (ASCP)

Mr. Miler has been in his current position as Pathologists’ Assistant at Piedmont
Augusta for 13 years and has been a lab rat since the early 90’s. Cincinnati,
Ohio is his hometown, and he still has a lot of family there. His wife Kristi is a work
from home cardiology tech, and they have 2 daughters, Sydney and Natalie, and 3
grandchildren. He’s an outdoors junkie and is on the hiking trail as often as
possible.

Mr. Miler works predominantly at Piedmont Augusta.

Jackie Maryak, Office Manager

Jackie Maryak is a healthcare operations leader specializing in anatomic and clinical pathology practice management. She brings more than 18 years of experience as a medical practice manager, building on several decades of experience managing nonprofit and retail organizations in Augusta.

Jackie earned a BA in Secondary Education from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and spent several years teaching language arts in public schools—including, somewhat unexpectedly, in a prison—before finding her way into medical practice management. Today, she happily alternates between her professional and retired lives, often doing both at the same time.

When she’s not working (which, admittedly, isn’t often), Jackie enjoys visiting her grandchildren, traveling, volunteering, hiking, playing the piano, spending time with her dog, playing bridge, and spending time with her very patient husband of 48 years.

Jackie works remotely – that is, she works everywhere all at once.
